How the GPA calculator Pakistan works
This GPA calculator Pakistan students use follows the official Higher Education Commission (HEC) 4.0 grading scale — the standard adopted by most universities in Pakistan, including semester-system programs at public and private universities. Instead of guessing your result from a transcript, you enter each course's credit hours and letter grade, and the calculator applies the standard weighted formula.
The GPA formula explained
GPA is a weighted average, not a simple average of grades. Each course contributes to your GPA in proportion to its credit hours:
GPA = sum of (grade points x credit hours) / total credit hours
For example, an A (4.00) in a 3-credit course contributes 12 quality points, while a B (3.00) in a 1-credit lab contributes only 3. That is why a low grade in a heavy course hurts more than a low grade in a light one.
HEC grade points used
The calculator uses the HEC scale: A = 4.00 (85-100), A- = 3.67 (80-84), B+ = 3.33 (75-79), B = 3.00 (70-74), B- = 2.67 (65-69), C+ = 2.33 (61-64), C = 2.00 (58-60), C- = 1.67 (55-57), D = 1.00 (50-54), F = 0.00 (below 50). Note that an F still adds its credit hours to the total, so retaking a failed course is the fastest way to repair your GPA.
Tips for using it well
- Calculate at mid-semester too — plug in your expected grades to see what you need in finals for your target GPA.
- Double-check lab and practical credit hours; they are easy to forget and they do count.
- For CGPA, add all your semesters' courses together or combine semester GPAs weighted by their credit hours.
